What would you do? (2)
In January I asked the question ‘What would you do?‘ It was about a guy I had not seen in 17 years and who, all of the sudden, wants to meet up with me, or better said who wants to stay at my house. The guy is backpacking around Australia and thinks that since we went to elementary school together that I owe him a roof over his head, food on the table and a tour guide for free. He is very close to where I live right now and he has plans to work in this area.
After that last post I have been ignoring him. I have not replied to his emails, I have not replied to his messages on hyves and I have unsubscribed myself from his mailing-list (of blog updates) that he put me on without asking. You would think that he gets the picture. You would think that maybe if someone ignores you they might not be interested. But… he doesn’t get it!
Yesterday my mum gave me a buzz that he now has my home phone number. Apparently he had asked his mum to ring my relatives to get my home phone number. And I am pissed that someone has actually given it to her. So I am expecting a phone call any moment and I am thinking of what excuse I can give him. The thing is that I don’t want to come up with an excuse. I just don’t want to see the guy or even talk to him. When I still lived in Holland I would not have talked to him, so why should I now?
For now, I am just staying online all day even when I am not behind the computer (I have a dial-up modem) so at least I don’t have to answer the phone. People who really need to talk to me can always reach me on my mobile.

That’s crazy that the guy will not get the hint. I am all for avoidance, but in this situation, I might have to take his call and just tell him nicely, “You know this is not going to work out having you stay at my house. I’ve tried to be tactful about this, but you haven’t gotten the message. Please don’t call me and please don’t plan on staying with me. Have a good trip!”
I mean really, what do you have left to lose?

Oh, hell no. You haven’t seen each other in 17 years and suddenly he wants to stay with you and he won’t stop bugging you about it? I don’t think so. I’d send him a message through hyves and tell him to back the hell off!
