Furniture problems

For the last three years we’ve been living with ‘temporary’ furniture in my house. The ‘temporary’ furniture consists of lots of second hand furniture and ‘gifts’ from family and friends. The plan was to live with this furniture until our own beautiful furniture would be shipped over once we buy a house. But we are three years down the track and it doesn’t even look like we’re getting close to getting our own house. Our house is simply to small to fit all our own furniture. Fortunately my parents don’t mind storing it at their house for that long.

But the thing is that I am getting tired of living in a house that has no decoration at all and with furniture I don’t like. I wouldn’t have mind so much if it was indeed temporary, but three years is long. Especially since we had to get rid of some furniture after it broke down. We have a dining room table, but no chairs to go with it. We don’t have a couch, we use a crappy futon to sit on. The TV is on some sort of wooden table made by an old friend, but it desperately needs to be replaced. I could go on and on.

Fact is that is that I start to get fed up with it. I don’t feel comfortable when people visit us, because they get the impression that we’re bums. I don’t even have sitting space for four people. I’ve been thinking about replacing some pieces of furniture, but I don’t want to pay a lot of money for it. So lately I’ve been looking around the internet for sites like directbuy who sell furniture for a cheap prize and I’ve been going to vintage shops to see if I can find something decent for a prize I can afford.

Does anyone have any other ideas to make our house look a little bit better for not much money?

I can relate. In an attempt to get my husband to buy me a new living room set, i threw out our old one.

Three years later, and we still don’t have a new set, which means we have no where for company to sit other than our kitchen tables. It’s absolute misery.
