When I moved to Australia to be with my partner one of the first things I did was get insurance. My partner had ‘forgotten’ about it until he got into a serious work accident. Fortunately he was insured through his work and we didn’t have to pay for all the medical costs. Without that insurance we probably would be very broke right now.

The first insurance I got was a life insurance because you never know what is going to happen and you do not want to leave your partner or family empty handed when you pass away.

After that I got a home insurance because back then we lived in a bit of a dodgy area. A lot of houses got broken into and I didn’t want to take the risk of having to pay myself to replace things that get stolen or get damaged in any kind of way.

I also took a car insurance and I am very happy I did because three months later our car got stolen. We were pretty skinned at the time and were happy to see that we got a fair amount of money back so we could replace our stolen car.

There are so many things you can insure yourself for these days and that is a good thing. Paying a small monthly fee is a small price to pay compared to having to pay a lot at once out of your own pocket.
